These oak galls have had much of their fuzz scraped off and the actual shapes of the galls are now visible along the midrib vein of the leaf. An exit hole is visible at the top of one of the galls. The host oak is Quercus virginiana (southern live oak). This oak is not native in California but is sometimes planted in parks and other locations in the state. The galls are made by wasps also not native to California. Both the oak and wasp are native to the eastern U.S.
