Cydia deshaisiana
2222_1559 Photo added 2007-12-07

Cydia deshaisiana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)
UC Berkeley campus, Berkeley, Alameda County, California
November 23, 2007

The larvae of this moth develop inside seeds of shrubs in the genus Sebastiania. The larvae move suddenly and make the seeds 'jump' in response to certain conditions. The seeds with the larvae in them are known as Mexican jumping beans. In this photo the seed has been cut open to show the larva inside.
