Megarhyssa atrata
(Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae)
Female laying eggs in foreground; male is standing behind her. The female's long ovipositor is poking into a hole in the wood. Note the other ovipositor coming out of the hole, towards the upper right corner of the photo. This ovipositor is probably from another female whose ovipositor got stuck after laying eggs, or who got eaten while laying her eggs--and her ovipositor ripped off and is still stuck in the tree stump. |
